PSHE at Elms Farm

Hi I'm Miss Knight and I am the leader for PSHE at Elms Farm School. PSHE stands for personal, social, health and economic. I enjoy PSHE because unlike some subjects that can feel abstract, PSHE connects directly to real experiences — relationships, wellbeing, decision-making, and understanding yourself and others. That relevance can make it feel more meaningful. PSHE often involves thinking about your goals, emotions, and values which is something that I think is important for children and is reflected through our school values. PSHE lessons are usually less rigid than other subjects — more about conversation, group work, and expressing opinions. That freedom can make learning feel more relaxed and enjoyable.

PSHE education is a school curriculum subject in England that helps children and young people stay healthy, safe and prepared for life – and work – in modern Britain. When taught well, PSHE education also helps pupils to achieve their academic potential.  (PSHE Association) PSHE  teaches children the knowledge, skills, and values they need to lead safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives — both now and in the future.

In our PSHE curriculum, our school aims to tackle a range of world issues and teach children how to become better people and better citizens and members of the community. We do this by instilling British Values into our children, looking at the meaning behind the rule of law, democracy, individual liberty (and individuality) and respect for different cultures, faiths and beliefs. We also aim to teach our children about different types of relationships and to understand the different relationships they will encounter in their lives as well as staying safe and being healthy. The Department for Education (DfE) calls PSHE education ‘an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education’ and that ‘all schools should teach PSHE, drawing on good practice’.

PSHE Long Term Plan

SCARF

We use a PSHE scheme of work called SCARF: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship. SCARF is a whole school approach which provides half termly units of work in the following areas: Me and my relationships, Valuing difference, , Keeping myself safe, Rights and responsibilities and Being my best. SCARF's whole-school approach supports primary schools in promoting positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement. As part of our subscription with SCARF, we are fortunate to have yearly Life Base sessions. Trained educators deliver fun, engaging and memorable PSHE Education workshops to children.  During these workshops, children meet Harold, the giraffe puppet (‘Healthy Harold’) and friends, have discussions and watch short films about healthy eating,  drugs –  legal and illegal –  and their effects, the body and how it works, friendships and their influence, and how choices and behaviours can affect children’s health and education outcomes.  Coram Life Education’s work includes challenging social norms – misperceptions of peers’ engagement with risky behaviour – to engender more positive behaviours. To find out more about SCARF, please visit their website: (coramlifeeducation.org.uk)
