Art and Design at Elms Farm
Hello, my name is Miss Field and I am art leader at Elms Farm. I love art because it is a wonderful way to share ideas and feelings without needing lots of words. Art lets us use colours, shapes, and patterns to show our imagination and creativity. When we make or look at art, we can discover new ways of seeing the world and even learn more about ourselves. For me, art is exciting because every picture tells a story, and every child can be an artist in their own special way.
Children at Elms Farm love the arts, it is their chance to show off their creativity and inject some personality into their work. The Arts are celebrated well throughout school and children are given ample opportunity to partake in art, music and drama activities.
Parents have been very involved with the arts at Elms Farm through parent workshops, creating and helping with art projects at home and coming to see year group performances and assemblies.
Effective pedagogy in primary school art emphasizes creativity, exploration, and the development of critical thinking. Research highlights that “every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up” (Picasso, quoted in Teaching Expertise), reminding educators of the importance of nurturing creativity from an early age. The Ofsted Research Review on art and design stresses that “high-quality art education enables pupils to think critically and develop a deeper understanding of culture and creativity” (Ofsted Research Review, cited by NSEAD).
Children partake in weekly art and music sessions based around their current topics per year group and drama sessions are built into English sessions. Children are given the opportunity to develop their skills across each year group and phase and put this into practice. The skills progression document and long term plan allows for progression across the year group and the skills and concrete knowledge are built upon year on year.
We are also part of a Creative Connections network of schools which allows Elms Farm to take part in art, drama and dance events working with local schools and partnership artists and venues. We have enjoyed poetry slams, workshops with artists, poets and illustrators and also had our work on display around school and at the IKON gallery in Birmingham.

Summer Festival
We held a summer festival in school to celebrate the Arts at Elms Farm. Every year group contributed to the art gallery in the hall and each year group performed songs, poetry and instrumental performances to parents in the hall.
Year 3 Artwork at the IKON Gallery
Year 3 completed an art unit with ceramics artist Gugan Gill where they completed art work and senses work based on Christina Rosetti's poem What is Pink? They then created terracotta tiles using hand - pressing techniques using inspiration from the local area and environment and explored plants and pattern found in nature.
